Remember the time water from the washing machine came gushing of out the toilet and pretty much flooded the downstairs? It was the night before Easter and I was up doing the bunny’s job. And doing laundry. If I’m breathing, I’m doing laundry. And something went wrong with your pipes somehow and water backed up and came out of every available hole. I spent hours sopping up water. It happened twice that night but never happened again the 13 years we were together.
Remember the loud explosions from the back yard? When I raced out the back door to investigate, I found little boys with dirt under their fingernails, building Lego ships and sailing them in the big, galvanized tub before blowing them up with bottle rockets. Boom! Legos filled the air. They all screamed with excitement. I’m sure there are still Legos under your back deck buried just beneath the dirt.
Remember the Thanksgiving dinners for people that had nowhere else to go? They thought they were going to be strangers at a family dinner. As people arrived, they realized that no one knew anyone else. And we all had a blast. We came as strangers and left as friends.
Remember when the captain got banished from the nursing home and was bound for homelessness? He moved into the empty upstairs bedroom. One night he came downstairs wearing only his tighty whities, sneakers and giant red sunglasses. Everyone just laughed and patted him on the back. And left him to enjoy himself in those red sunglasses.
The sword fights. The taco nights. The Christmas dinners. The Memorial Day cookouts. The comedy cafes. The karaoke contests. The fiddle lessons. The piano lessons. The craft sessions. The Bible studies. The all night conversations. The funny, shallow daytime conversations. The game nights. The movie nights. Remember?
Remember the music? Remember the laughter? Remember the tears? Remember Dana, Carlos, Saul, Tom Music, Cori, Tim, Michael, Jeff, Brandon, Wade, Lillie, Jack, Jaison, Daphney, Eddie, Jaxon, Spencer, Jared, Billy, Abby, Biscuit and Bubba?
You gave us shelter. You kept us warm. You kept us safe. Inside your walls, boys became men. Inside your walls, love and friendship flourished. Inside your walls, the broken came to mend. Inside your walls, strangers and stray animals found refuge and kindness. Now, you are for sale. It’s time for you to provide these things to another clan. I will remember you. Will you remember me?
